Installing MediaWiki in a Hosted Environment
Installation is described in two articles which 'step through' the process:-
- Automated Install
Your Hosting Provider has an automated installer for MediaWiki - Manual Install
Your Hosting Provider does not have an automated installer for MediaWiki, or
Your Hosting Provider does not list a current version of MediaWiki.
Preliminary Steps
- Select a hosting provider and create an Account.
- Register a Domain Name, or select a domain name which the hosting provider will register as part of your initial account setup.
- Log in to your account and get familiar with cPanel
- In cPanel look for MediaWiki among the software provided by Softaculous
- If MediaWiki is available for you life will be relatively easy
- If MediaWiki is not available, installation is possible, just a bit more difficult
- Use cPanel to set up an FTP user and folder. You will need this to upload files like MediaWiki extensions.
- Be prepared to install MediaWiki, get familiar with it, try a few things - and then trash it and start with a fresh install for actual use.
