MediaWiki Terms
- LocalSettings.php
- A file in the /w directory which contains the configuration settings for the MediaWiki site

- A Tooltip is some additional information which appears on the screen when the cursor or mouse pointer is placed over some text which is faintly underlined.
- magic word
- A MediaWiki feature written like __TEXT__ which acts as a behaviour switch. See Magic Words.

Web Hosting Terms
- Dedicated hosting
- A premium service where the user (companies or large organisations) have dedicated access to a server cpu, memory and bandwidth resources.
- Domain Name
- The name selected by a person or company (Registrant) to use as the name of their website or presence on the Internet, registered though a Domain Registrar. For example mh370wiki.net
- Domain Privacy
- A service which hides personal information from a public lookup like whois. Available in the USA and perhaps some other countries.
- Domain Registrar
- A company that manages (and registers) domain names
- Domain reseller
- A company that works with a Domain Registrar and sells domain name registrations.
- Website Hosting Providers often act as domain resellers
- Hosting Provider
- A company that that manages server infrastructures or a data center to provide end-users with space for data and access to the Internet for websites
- IANA
- A standards organisation responsible for IP address allocation. Blocks of IP Addresses are assigned to Regional Internet Registries.
- Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA)
- ICANN
- Organisation that oversees domain name registration. Ensures each domain name is unique.
- Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
- ISP
- Internet Service Provider A company that provides end-users (businesses, home computers and wi-fi) access to Internet services.
- Registrant
- The person or company that owns a domain name
- Shared Hosting
- Multiple hosted websites which share CPU, memory and bandwidth resources on the same server.
- Second Level Domain
- The Second Level Domain (SLD) is the registered part of a domain name that uniquely identifies the website, and precedes the top level domain in a website address. For example, in the domain name mw.mh370.wiki, mw is a Subdomain, mh370 is a Second Level Domain, and .wiki is a (generic) Top Level Domain (gTLD).
- Subdomain
- A user-defined tag which precedes the registered domain name and used to identify a separate section of a website.
- Top Level Domain
- Top Level Domain country code (ccTLD) examples are .au (Australia), .ca (Canada), .de (Germany) .fr (France), .ru (Russia), .uk (United Kingdom)
- Top Level Domain generic (gTLD) are not country specific. Originally gTLDs were the .com, .org, .net, .edu, .gov, .mil suffix to a domain name. Additional gTLDs include .wiki
- URL
- Uniform Resource Locator A web address including the protocol and domain followed by the path to a specific webpage.
cPanel Terms
- cPanel
- A web hosting Control Panel that enables users to manage their files, domains, websites and more. See cPanel.
- WHM
- Web Host Manager - used by Systems Administrators (Hosting Providers) to create and manage the customer's cPanel accounts and hosting packages.
- Softaculous
- An auto-installer for applications including MediaWiki, Wordpress, Joomla etc. Softaculous is integrated into cPanel. See Softaculous.
- hPanel
- Similar to cPanel but optimised for Hostinger's infrastructure, particularly Virtual Private Servers (VPS). See Hostinger.
File Formats
Image File Formats
- .gif
- Image file format which allows simple animation. Generally limited to 256 colours. Supported by MediaWiki.
- Graphics Interchange Format (GIF)
- .jpg
- .jpeg
- Image file format common on webpages. Supported by MediaWiki.
- Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG)
- .tiff
- Image file format using lossless compression and not common on webpages due to their large size. Not supported by MediaWiki.
- Tagged Image File (TIFF)
- .png
- Lossless image file format which supports 16 million colours. Supported by MediaWiki.
- Portable Network Graphics (PNG)
- .webp
- An image file format created by Google to replace jpeg. Supported by MediaWiki.
Other File Formats
- .css
- Styles used to format webpages. MediaWiki users can store custom css in the page MediaWiki:Common.css.
- Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
- .less
- A style sheet which extends the features of CSS. Used by MediaWiki.
- Leaner Style Sheets (LESS)
- .json
- a text format for storing and transporting data. Used by MediaWiki.
- JavaScript Object Notation (JSON)
- A common file format for documents. Requires an Adobe reader or equivalent. Not supported by MediaWiki.
- Portable Document Format (PDF)
- .php
- Default extension for PHP files, commonly used for server-side scripts. Used extensively by MediaWiki. For example LocalSettings.php
- PHP is a recursive acronym meaning PHP:Hypertext Preprocessor
Networking Terms
- DNS
- Domain Name System (DNS): Resolves a website common name and location (URL) into an IP address
- FTP
- File Transfer Protocol (FTP): A Protocol for Transferring Files (data) between devices, for example a local computer and a remote webserver.
- HTML
- Common programming syntax for web pages
- HTTP
- Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP): A Protocol that enables a browser to request a webpage and the web server to Transfer a HyperText document to the browser.
- HTTPS
- HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS): A secure protocol for transferring webspages on the Internet.
- IP Address
- Unique address assigned to internet-connected devices.
- SEO
- Search engine optimization (SEO): Processes and methods to improve website ranking in search results.
- TCP
- Transmission Control Protocol (TCP): Ensures reliable transmission of data over the Internet. Establishes the connection, checks data is delivered, resends if necessary.
- TCP/IP
- Two protocols which work together, fundamental to data transfer over the Internet. IP ensures data is sent to the correct address; TCP ensures that the data gets there.
- Webmaster
- A person who manages a website.
Web Design Terms
- Accessibility
- Guidelines to ensure the website suits all users including those with disabilities
- breadcrumbs
- A breadcrumb trail is a navigation aid to help users locate higher levels in a website hierarchy
- CSS
- Cascading Style Sheets - definitions for style and layout of web pages. Enables separation of presentation and content.
- Responsive design
- Content presentation automatically adjusts (the layout and menus may change) to display correctly on different screen sizes, phones through to desktops
