A Guide to Using MediaWiki in a Hosted Environment

An instructional website by the developer of mh370wiki.net - a MediaWiki site about Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.

Site-wide CSS is stored in two places:-

  1. A page related to the skin, for example Vector.css
  2. A page named Common.css, for all other custom CSS

Despite the .css these are not files.

Both pages are located in the MediaWiki namespace. Initially that namespace appears empty, but if you search for these pages MediaWiki will seem to 'find' them.

For example, if you enter MediaWiki:Common.css in the Search Box and click search, the following appears on-screen:-

If you select Edit then you will be confronted by a Warning, which we will ignore:-

The first addition to this page are the styles for rows and columns which I have imported from the website www.mh370wiki.net.

I usually add comments which include the date and reason for any additions or changes.

If I am about to make a radical change, or restructure the page, I also make a backup copy first by creating another page in the MediaWiki namespace, copy the current version of Common.css into the new page, add some notes about why the backup was required, and save it for use if needed.
